Tackling Mental Illness and Addiction with a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

As Hawaii grapples with a fentanyl and mental health crisis, medical professionals are finding ways to help those in need.
Dave Fields, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and founder of Fields Psychiatric Consultants, joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about providing trauma-informed care to people on Oahu and Maui who are struggling with mental health challenges, addiction, psychosis and homelessness.

Fields said that one of the main obstacles is that crisis-diversion laws are outdated.

“Mental illness and addiction are real, and they’re treatable,” he said. “But to truly make a difference, we need earlier support, more compassion and policies that reflect the realities people face every day.”
